The Willem Hardy Golden Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been set up by Will’s family and friends to recognize his incredible spirit. While many remember him as an athlete and teammate, he is also remembered by those who knew him best as honest, a fierce protector and loyal to all those he loved. Will dedicated himself to his dream of playing college sports and worked incredibly hard both on and off the field to achieve his goal. His lively spirit was tough on the outside, but soft, kind and funny on the inside.

2023

In 2023, Aizza Chase and Isabella Cacciapuoti were the recipients of the Willem Golden Memorial Scholarship for the senior class. The two girls shared stories of how they embodied characteristics of who Will was. Aizza continued her studies and lacrosse endeavors at Roger Williams University, while Isabella traveled south to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Good luck to both!

2022

James Appleton and Peter Vitello were the 2021 winners for the Willem Golden Memorial Scholarship. James had a close bond with Will as he was growing up and the stories he shared with the Goldens was a kind reminder of who Will was and what he meant to those in town. Peter shared strong qualities that he shared with Will and it was clear he was the perfect candidate for the 2021 award. James traveled to the midwest to attend the University of Wisconsin, while Peter stayed a bit closer to home at Merrimack College. Enjoy the four years ahead!

2021

For the second year in a row, the Golden family chose to share the Willem Golden Memorial Scholarship with two recipients. Devin McGinty and Bernie Mulcahy were the 2021 winners for the senior class at Cohasset High School. Devin continued his academic career at Boston College, while Bernie chose to head to New England College. Good luck to both boys in their future endeavors!

2020

In 2020,  we chose to honor two recipients of the Willem Hardy Golden Memorial Scholarship, Jack Fitzpatrick and Kyle Osborne. This is the fourth year that we have bestowed this award to Cohasset seniors that exemplify the characteristics that made Will such a special person. Jack followed in similar footsteps as Will and raced up to Skidmore College to play Lacrosse, while Kyle chose to attend a school not too far away, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Good luck to Jack and Kyle in upstate New York!

2019

Chris Lund presented Lauren Scott with the third annual WHG memorial scholarship which was accepted by Lauren Scott. Lauren’s essay highlighted hard work and determination as a team member while at the same time urging those around her to work hard for that common goal. These were characteristics that we admired in Will and helped to define who he was.

2018

Congratulations to Brian Doyle on being the second recipient of the Willem Hardy Golden Memorial Scholarship. It sounds like Brian and Will had much in common; the love of sports and the devotion to family and friends. These traits, as presented in his essay, made it easy for the nomination committee to agree that Brian was the best candidate for the 2018 scholarship. We wish Brian the best of luck in his college endeavors and as he moves forward in life.
